Chilionema ocellatum (Kützing) Kuckuck


Description: Appearing minute, as small spots on other algae. 3 mm or less in diameter, may become united with others. Grows as a monostromatic base with erect filaments several cells long and unbranched.

Habitat: Epiphytic on Palmaria palmata in the lower littoral and upper sublittoral.

Distribution: Recorded from scattered sited around the British Isles including the Shetlands. Europe: France, Denmark, Baltic Sea, Sweden and Norway.

Similar Species: There are other small spots or stain-like patches epiphytic on algae. All difficult to identify and require a microscope.
