Stragularia spongiocarpa (Batters) G Hamel


Description: Thallus encrusting to 2 to 3 cms or more in diameter when confluent with other specimens. Margins thin but firmly attached to rock.

Habitat: Extremely rare. Epiliphic in shallow rock pools of the low littoral. Fertile during the winter.

Distribution: Few records from the British Isles, apparently on southern and eastern shores of England and Scotland.

Similar Species: Stragularia clavata the differences are microscopic. Ralfsia verrucosa is also similar but usually has raised margins.
