Gymnogongrus griffithsiae (Turner) Martius


Description: Growing from a discoid holdfast, the erect fronds are tufted, stiff and terete up to 5 cms long. The thallus frond is basically dichotomous and the branches are slightly flattened at the tips.

Habitat: Widely distributed but very occasional. Epilithic in pools of the upper sublittoral.

Distribution: Widely distributed but mainly a south-western species in the British Isles with occasional records from Scotland. Europe: Mediterranean, Azores, Portugal and Spain. Atlantic coast of North America: Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Virginia. Also recorded from the Canary Islands.

Similar Species: Ahnfeltia plicata, however Gymnogongrus is less wiry, shorter and more regularly branched.
