| PISCES : Syngnathiformes : Syngnathidae | BONY FISH |
Description: A relatively large pipefish that any reaches up to 35 cm in length. It has a long, deep, laterally compressed snout and the head has a very straight profile when compared with Syngnathus acus, with no obvious hump. The colouration is commonly a mottled green or light brown depending on the surrounding habitat. The tail fin is well-developed and the body is obviously segmented.
Habitat: Commonly found amongst seagrass (Zostera marina) or amongst algae in rocky habitats, down to around 20 m.
Distribution: Not often recorded and appear to be more common in southern Britain and Ireland not coming much further north than Wales, although there are a few records from Scotland.
Similar Species: Could be confused with some of the other pipefish but the long, deep snout and straight head profile should distinguish this species. Most likely to be confused with Syngnathus acus but close inspection of the head profile and snout length should help.
