Description: This solid bivalve has an overall elongate oval shape but forms a sharp angle at the posterior margin and a straight edge to the shell here. It can reaches just over 5 cm. The outer surface is a dull white, cream, yellow or even red, pink or purple, in concentric bands. It sometimes has white to cream rays. Outer surface may be covered in part by the thick dark brown to green-brown periostracum. Growth stages are clear and there is a structure of fine concentric lines on the outer surface of the valves. The valves have a small posterior gape. Inside of the shell either white with a pink hue or light purple with white margins. Pallial sinus is deep and U-shaped.

Habitat: Fine sand from lower shore down to 200 m, but rare beyond 100 m.

Distribution: Widespread around Britain and Ireland.

Similar Species: Could be confused with Gari depressa or Gari tellinella.
