Amphorina andra

Description: This species was previously thought to be a colour form of Amphorina farrani but was distinguished from that species by DNA results and shown to have a series of colour morphs which are partly in parallel with the colour morphs of A. farrani. It is currently considered to be synonymous with A. viriola, another species with similar colour morphs and almost identical COI barcodes. A. viriola is said to be confined to brackish water at the entrance to the Baltic Sea. As these species are both said to be present in that area and are distinguishable by the colour of the ceratal tips and the water bodies they inhabit we have retained the name A. andra until further investigations are carried out.

Habitat: Usually found in the shallow subtidal, it feeds on species of Obelia. The spawn is a ribbon laid in a spiral of about two turns, flared out on its upper margin.

Distribution: Found all around the British Isles and from Norway to the Mediterranean.
