Hyas coarctatus

Description: Pear-shaped carapace length of up to 6 cm and width of 4 cm. Colouration red, red-brown or yellow on top, white underneath. Long points on rostrum, more widely spaced than in Hyas araneus, but they do join at the tips. Pincers are the same length as the walking legs

Habitat: On hard and sandy substrata from lower shore to depths of 50 m, rare records exists for depths up to 500 m.

Distribution: Found on all coasts of Britain and Ireland.

Similar Species: Could be confused with Hyas araneus, although H. coarctatus is smaller in size, has slightly longer points on rostrum and its pincers are longer.
