Ebalia granulosa H. Milne Edwards, 1837


Description: Broader then it is long, making it roughly diamond shaped, the carapace length is just over 1 cm. Colouration is yellowish, with two red spots on carapace. The surface of the carapace is covered in small smooth bumps (tubercles) which range from almost flat to bead-like. Three roughly circular raised regions on carapace, one towards each outer edge and one towards the back of the animal. Region at the back of the carapace usually developed into two points.

Habitat: Records are from deeper water (40 m – 3000 m).

Distribution: Recorded on all coasts of Britain and Ireland. Few records, potentially under-recorded due to similarity with other species.

Similar Species: Could be confused with other Ebalia species. Careful inspection of carapace shape required.

  • Region at the back of the carapace usually developed into two points.
