Caprella tuberculata Guérin-Meneville, 1836

Description: This caprellid ranges from 4-6 mm up to 15 mm. First body section (pereonite 1) is elongated. The head and first pereonite are usually smooth, and the upper back (pereonite 2) setose, further down there are some dorsal tubercles present, especially towards the end of the body. There are dense swimming setae (hairs) on antenna 2. The basis of gnathopod 2 is shorter than half the length of pereonite 2.

Habitat: Unknown.

Distribution: Scattered records from around Britain, none so far from the island of Ireland.

Similar Species: Could be confused with other caprellids, careful inspection of body segments and antennae should help distinguish. There is possibly some confusion over this species, and at present it is not clear whether there it is a species complex.

  • Pereonite 1 elongated.
