Chone infundibuliformis Krøyer, 1856


Description: This worm grows up to 120 mm, and lives in a thin muddy tube that is usually encrusted with sand or shell fragments. The body is pink or green with a crown of orange-coloured tentacles. There are normally 24 pairs of tentacles (radioles) but this may vary between individuals. Membrane extends about 2/3rds of the way up the crown. Collar has a swollen, horseshoe-shaped ventral shield.

Habitat: Soft sediment.

Distribution: Found all around Britain and Ireland where there is suitable habitat.

Similar Species: Could potentially be confused with other burrowing/tub-dwelling polychaetes. Careful examination may be required - a high quality photograph may be sufficient to distinguish.

  • Pink to green body.
  • Crown of 24 pairs of orange radioles.
  • Membrane extends around 2/3rds of the way up the crown of tentacles.
  • Ventral shield swollen and horseshoe shaped.
