Syntomus truncatellus (Linnaeus, 1761)

Description: A small (2.6-3.2mm) black ground beetle of bare firm sand or short turf in sandy places. Only on the coast near Dublin.

NI account: Much rarer than S. foveatus and recorded historically only from sites in north Dublin (Portmarnock, Malahide). However, found commonly on Baltray Dunes at the mouth of the River Boyne (Co. Louth) by Anderson and Bryan in June 2014.

Ecology: A stenotopic sand-dune species found in similar habitats and niches as the previous species.

Distribution: A Eurasian Wide-temperate species (65) found across Europe except the extreme north, east to the Caucasus and eastern Siberia.

Similar Species: Syntomus foveatus: larger; elytra nearly parallel-sided; upper surface bronzed and legs black; elytra dull

Key Identification Features:

  • Very small (2.6-3.2mm),
  • Elytra truncate and sinuate at apex (Fig. 96)
  • Elytra broad and expanding apically
  • Upper surface black with only faint bronze lustre and legs brown
  • Elytra moderately shiny
