Badister sodalis (Duftschmid, 1812)

Description: A 4-5mm long brownish black Badister with yellow elytral markings. Found among damp leaf litter and moss in wet woods. Widespread.

NI account: Local and uncommon but found throughout Ireland.

Ecology: Recorded from marshy woodland and carr on eutrophic lakeshores or riverbanks. This is the only hygrophilous species of the genus whose range extends to the northern part of Ireland.

Distribution: A European temperate (or Wide-temperate) species (73) distributed from southern Fennoscandia south and east across Europe to Asia Minor, the Caucasus and Iran.

Similar Species: Distinguishable from other Irish Badister on the pale humeral spot on otherwise dark elytra and on sharp pronotal hind angles

Key Identification Features:

  • Small, elytra iridescent and with fine, impunctate striae
  • Mandibles asymmetric, right mandible having a large dorsal tubercle and notch (Fig. 104), as bullatus
  • Second segment of antennae very short
  • Colour dark with a pale humeral spot on elytra, otherwise only elytral margins slightly paler
  • Hind angles of pronotum sharp (Fig. 90)
