Stenolophus mixtus (Herbst., 1784)

Description: A 5-5.5mm long blackish brown ground beetle with paler markings, living at the margins of ponds, rivers, fens and turloughs, sometimes among dense vegetation. Very local.

NI account: Scattered and very local. Not in northern counties.

Ecology: Recorded from silty, well-vegetated lakeshores, usually on limestone e.g. lakes in the Burren, Clare.

Distribution: A Eurosiberian Wide-temperate species (64) found across Europe, except the extreme north, to Asia Minor, Iran and western Siberia.

Key Identification Features:

  • Small (5-6mm), fairly convex and iridescent
  • Pronotum with hind angles completely rounded
  • First segment of meta tarsi with a thin external keel
  • Upper surface dark, margins pale
