Bradycellus verbasci (Duftschmid, 1812)

Description: A 4.5-5mm long reddish-brown ground beetle. Phytophagous, and found on sandy and gravelly soils, including gardens. Common and widespread.

NI account: Widespread on low and high ground, but mainly near the coast.

Ecology: Relatively common on well-drained farm soils, gardens and woods but mainly in sandy places near the coast.

Distribution: A European Southern-temperate species (83), widespread in Europe from extreme southern Fennoscandia to southern Iberia, and found east to the Urals, Asia Minor and Iran.

Similar Species: Bradycellus sharpi: upper surface dark brown; wings reduced

  • Small (3-3.9mm), convex and short-legged
  • Upper surface glabrous
  • Mentum with tooth
  • Pronotum with rounded but well-defined hind angles (Fig. 91)
  • Upper surface reddish-yellow
  • Wings full
