Dicheirotrichus placidus (Gyllenhal, 1827)

Description: 4-5.5mm long brownish black ground beetle living among reed and other litter of fens and lowland river banks. Widespread but local.

NI account: Widespread but mainly in the east and south, on lowland river margins, lakeshores and swamps.

Ecology: It has been recorded from fens, marshes and well-vegetated riverbanks and lakeshores in mesotrophic to eutrophic conditions.

Distribution: A Eurosiberian Boreo-temperate species (54) found across Europe from Fennoscandia south to Italy and east into the Caucasus, Asia Minor and western Siberia.

Similar Species: Dicheirotrichus cognatus: smaller (3.5-4.2mm); only first antennal segment pale, legs dark

Key Identification Features:

  • Small (4-5.5mm), fairly convex and short-legged
  • Lateral margins of upper surface punctate and pubescent
  • Pronotum with rounded hind angles
  • Abbreviated scutellar striae absent
  • Two to three basal antennal segments pale and legs entirely pale
