Dicheirotrichus gustavii Crotch, 1871

Description: A 5-7.5mm dimorphic ground beetle, the males almost completely black, the females yellow to red-brown, often marked with black. A common saltmarsh species, living in strandline debris at the top of the shore.

NI account: Widespread in sheltered bays and estuaries around the coast.

Ecology: Halobiontic and a common inhabitant of saltmarshes under stones or weed on muddy, well-vegetated ground.

Distribution: Distributed along the coast from the Baltic to the Mediterranean in Europe; Eurosiberian Wide-temperate (64). Inland a similar form is recorded from central Europe east to western Siberia and north-west China.

Similar Species: (Dicheirotrichus obsoletus: puncturation denser, with about three rows on each elytral interval)

Key Identification Features:

  • Medium (5-8mm), entire upper surface punctate and pubescent
  • Seashore only
  • Pronotum with sinuate sides, hind angles moderately sharp
  • Puncturation of upper surface coarse, with 1-2 rows on each elytral interval
