Amara lunicollis Schioedte, 1837

Description: A 7.5-9mm long Amara of wet meadows, marshes and peatlands. Widely distributed.

NI account: Very widespread but not very common. Also in peaty uplands in the north.

Ecology: Eurytopic and found on a variety of soil types. Recorded from gardens, pasture and Calluna heath up to moderate altitudes.

Distribution: Circumpolar Boreo-temperate (56), found across Europe south to Iran and east across Siberia to northern N. America.

Similar Species: The only Irish species with 1 or 2 pale basal segments of antennae - Note: specimens with completely dark antennae occur occasionally

  • Body stout and a characteristic 'oval' shape
  • Head with two supra orbital punctures
  • Elytra lacking pore-puncture at base of scutellar stria
  • Terminal spur of pro-tibia simple
  • Hind angles of pronotum simple
  • Antennae with 1 or 2 pale basal segments
  • Elytral striae moderate, intervals convex
  • Femora dark
