Amara familiaris (Duftschmid, 1812)

Description: 5.5-7.2mm long brassy Amara. Phytophagous. Common in all types of open ground, including gardens and arable land.

NI account: Widespread and probably common, especially near coasts.

Ecology: Eurytopic on well-drained soils.

Distribution: A Eurosiberian Wide-temperate species (64) spread over most of Europe to north Africa and east across Siberia to Mongolia. Introduced in N. America.

Similar Species: Distinguished from other Irish Amara by the combination of dark antennae and pale legs, except A. lucida: front angles of pronotum rounded, little protruding (Fig. 82)

  • Body stout and a characteristic 'oval' shape
  • Head with two supra orbital punctures
  • Elytra lacking pore-puncture at base of scutellar stria
  • Terminal spur of pro-tibia simple
  • Hind angles of pronotum simple
  • Antennae with 3 (or 4) pale basal segments
  • Elytral striae moderately impressed, intervals convex apically
  • Legs entirely pale
  • Front angles of pronotum protruding, angulate (Fig. 82)
