Description: 6-9mm long ground beetle with two colour forms - black with a bright red pronotum, or all black. This species has recently been split into two C. melanocephalus and C. cinctus (=erythroderus). Both appear to a widespread, although the latter seems, at least initially, to be restricted to lowland, sandy, conditions, especially dunes. The type form is widespread in fairly dry conditions throughout the country. Records earlier than 1989 need to be re determined.
