Bembidion tibiale (Duftschmid, 1812)

Description: 5.5-6.5mm long black ground beetle with strong metallic blue or green reflections. Similar to to B. atrocoeruleum but larger and more shiny. Lives among shingle at the sides of rivers.

NI account: One of the commonest rocky streambank Bembidions in northern areas but possibly less common in central and southern districts.

Ecology: This species is characteristic, with B. atrocoeruleum, of gravelly or stony banks of small, clearwater streams running off high ground. Because it can tolerate shaded conditions it also often occurs with Agonum albipes and Bembidion monticola.

Distribution: Montane in most of its range in common with its close relatives B. geniculatum and B. atrocoeruleum. However, distributed from south-west Scandinavia and the British Isles to the Iberian Peninsula and east through southern Europe to the Caucasus. European Boreo-temperate (53).

Similar Species: Bembidion geniculatum: smaller, more convex; male genitalia different B. atrocoeruleum: smaller, more convex, duller; base of pronotum oblique laterally

Key Identification Features:

  • Small, flat (5.5-6.5mm)
  • Terminal segment of palpi much reduced (Fig. 31)
  • Second elytral stria as strong as first; all striae fairly strong to apex
  • Riparian on streambanks
  • Flat, parallel-sided
  • Base of pronotum straight (Fig. 53)
