Trechoblemus micros (Herbst, 1784)

Description: A small (4mm) reddish-brown ground beetle of riverine floodplains, hiding in crevices on river and stream margins. Widespread but local.

NI account: Local and uncommon in lowland districts of the east, but possibly overlooked because of its subterranean habits.

Ecology: Recorded principally from the alluvia of riverine flood plains. It has also been pitfall-trapped on arable farmland, although this is probably a secondary habitat.

Distribution: A Eurosiberian Wide-temperate species (64) distributed across the whole of Europe into western Siberia.

Similar Species: Blemus discus: eyes larger; pronotum glabrous; brighter, more rufous

Key Identification Features:

  • Sutural stria of elytra recurrent at apex (Fig. 35)
  • Frontal furrows running round to the back of the eyes (Fig. 32)
  • Both elytra and pronotum pubescent
  • Dull yellow-brown, dark macula on elytra usually faint or absent
